The route

See the country first, then stop entirely

Most Ayurveda holidays in Sri Lanka are either a fortnight in one clinic with nothing else, or a touring itinerary with a couple of massages attached. This is deliberately both, and in that order — the sightseeing is done while you still want to be doing it, and the retreat week is genuinely uninterrupted.

The clinic is licensed and registered with the Sri Lankan Department of Ayurveda, with resident physicians rather than spa therapists. Your programme is prescribed after a proper consultation rather than chosen from a treatment menu, and it is supervised daily.

Want longer, or something more specialised? Compare this against our full range of tour packages, browse the safari collection, or ask us to write a custom itinerary around your dates.

Why this itinerary

Real treatment, not a spa menu

A licensed clinic

Registered with the Department of Ayurveda, with resident qualified physicians. We give you the registration details before you pay.

Prescribed, not chosen

A proper consultation on arrival — history, pulse, constitution — and everything that follows is written from it.

Seven uninterrupted nights

No excursions, no long drives, no late nights. The week works precisely because nothing interrupts it.

German spoken

At the clinic and, on request, for the touring half. Ask at booking — German-speaking guides are limited.

What seven days can and cannot do

A full classical panchakarma runs fourteen to twenty-one days. Any clinic telling you a week delivers the complete process is overselling it, and we would rather be the operator that says so.

What seven nights genuinely gives you is a medically supervised introductory programme with all three phases — preparation, one prescribed main procedure, and a proper recovery period — plus a written plan to continue at home. That is a real thing, and it is a long way from a hotel spa week. If you want the full course, say so and we will restructure: fourteen or twenty-one nights at the clinic with a shorter touring half, at no markup on the extra nights.

A note on medical care

Day by day

Your journey unfolded

Every stop, every drive time, and what actually happens on each day.

01

Airport → Sigiriya

Approx. 175 km · 4h driving · Overnight in Sigiriya

North into the Cultural Triangle. It is the only long drive of the trip and it is over on day one — everything after this gets progressively slower.

Met inside arrivals

Your driver-guide tracks the flight, so a delay changes nothing. Sixty minutes of free waiting from the moment you land, and a German-speaking guide can be assigned if you request one at booking.

Into the dry zone

Past Kurunegala into the plains, where the irrigation tanks feeding this landscape were dug two thousand years ago and are still working.

An early night

Arrival late afternoon. Tomorrow starts before dawn, and the whole point of the last week of this trip is that you arrive at the coast already unwound rather than exhausted.

OVERNIGHT
Boutique lodge with a pool, Sigiriya
MEALS INCLUDED
Dinner
02

Sigiriya → Matale → Kandy

Approx. 95 km · 3h driving · Overnight in Kandy

The climb at first light, the cave temples on the way past, then the herbal garden that explains a good deal of what happens to you next week.

Sigiriya Lion Rock at dawn

The 5th-century fortress on a 200-metre column of rock. Around 1,200 steps, two hours at an unhurried pace, and considerably kinder before the heat arrives. Entrance included.

Dambulla Royal Cave Temple

Five caves painted continuously since the first century BC, and cooler than the rock. About an hour. Entrance included.

Matale spice and herbal garden

A working garden rather than a sales floor — cinnamon stripped from the branch, cardamom, pepper, and the medicinal plants that go into the oils used in your treatments. Nobody will pressure you to buy anything; we take no commission from any stop on this itinerary.

OVERNIGHT
Hotel above Kandy Lake
MEALS INCLUDED
Breakfast, dinner
03

Kandy → Ramboda → Nuwara Eliya

Approx. 80 km · 3h driving · Overnight in Nuwara Eliya

A short distance and a long, beautiful climb — from five hundred metres to nearly nineteen hundred, through the tea country.

Temple of the Sacred Tooth

The morning ceremony rather than the evening one, which is quieter. Shoulders and knees covered — we carry spare sarongs. Entrance included.

Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens

Sixty hectares of Kandyan garden including the orchid house, the spice walk and the giant Javan fig. A slow two hours. Entrance included.

Into the tea belt

Ramboda Falls and a working tea factory, then Nuwara Eliya. Bring a jumper — it drops to around 10°C at night and almost everyone is caught out.

OVERNIGHT
Colonial-era hotel, Nuwara Eliya
MEALS INCLUDED
Breakfast, dinner
04

Nanu Oya → Ella by rail

Approx. 20 km driving + 2h 30m by rail · Overnight in Ella

We drive you to the working railhead, hold your reserved seat and send your luggage ahead by road, so you board with a day bag only.

The hill country train

Reserved seats through the tea estates to Ella. Reservations open exactly 30 days ahead and sell out — we book them the morning they release.

Nine Arch Bridge, timed properly

We take you when a train is actually due rather than to an empty viaduct. A ten-minute walk down through the tea.

Little Adam’s Peak

A gentle 45-minute walk for the best view in Ella. Optional, and entirely fine to skip in favour of a long dinner.

OVERNIGHT
Hillside hotel with a valley view, Ella
MEALS INCLUDED
Breakfast, dinner
05

Ella → Udawalawe safari → south coast

Approx. 195 km · 4h 30m driving · Overnight near Galle

Down out of the hills to the sea, with one safari on the way. The last day of moving before the retreat week begins.

Ravana Falls and the Ella Gap

The waterfall on the descent and the long view south to the coastal plain. Twenty minutes and worth the stop.

Private jeep safari, Udawalawe

Your own jeep and a licensed tracker. Elephant sightings here are as close to guaranteed as Sri Lanka gets. US$40 park entrance is included, paid at the gate for you.

Arrival on the coast

Into a small hotel near Galle by early evening. One night here before the last transfer of the trip.

OVERNIGHT

06

Galle → Beruwala · retreat day 1

Approx. 75 km · 1h 30m driving · Retreat night 1 of 7

The last hour in a car for a week. You arrive by lunchtime, meet the doctor in the afternoon, and your programme is written around you rather than picked off a menu.

Galle Fort in the morning

The Dutch ramparts, the lighthouse and the old warehouses inside the walls. Around two hours, then north up the coast.

Doctor’s consultation

A qualified Ayurvedic physician takes your history, checks pulse and tongue, and assesses your constitution. Roughly forty minutes, and everything that follows for the next six days is prescribed from it.

Your programme begins

A light evening treatment, an early dinner from the prescribed kitchen, and a written daily schedule. Alcohol, caffeine and cold drinks come off the table from tonight — that is part of the treatment, not house rules.

OVERNIGHT
Licensed Ayurveda retreat, Beruwala
MEALS INCLUDED
Breakfast, lunch, dinner
07

Retreat · preparation phase

No driving · Purvakarma begins · Retreat night 2 of 7

The first full day. Ayurvedic treatment works in three phases and this is the first — preparing the body before anything is drawn out of it.

Abhyanga and swedana

Synchronised warm-oil massage by two therapists, followed by herbal steam. Roughly ninety minutes. The oils are chosen for your constitution rather than a standard blend.

Morning yoga and pranayama

Gentle, group, optional, and taught at a level that assumes you have never done it. Around 7am, before the heat.

Herbal medicines and diet

Internal preparations are prescribed from today, and the kitchen cooks to your constitution. Expect rice, dhal, vegetables and a great deal of ginger.

OVERNIGHT
Licensed Ayurveda retreat, Beruwala
MEALS INCLUDED
Breakfast, lunch, dinner
08

Retreat · preparation continues

No driving · Shirodhara · Retreat night 3 of 7

The body is still being softened. Most guests report sleeping unusually deeply from about this point, and finding the days slower than they expected.

Shirodhara

A continuous stream of warm oil poured across the forehead for around forty minutes. It is the treatment people remember, and the one most often described as unlike anything else.

Continued abhyanga

Daily oil massage continues, adjusted by the doctor after a short review each morning.

Rest is part of the prescription

You are not meant to be busy. There is no excursion scheduled and we would gently discourage you from arranging one.

OVERNIGHT
Licensed Ayurveda retreat, Beruwala
MEALS INCLUDED
Breakfast, lunch, dinner
09

Retreat · main phase

No driving · Pradhanakarma · Retreat night 4 of 7

The central treatment, prescribed individually. This is the day the programme is actually built around and it is not a spa day.

Your prescribed main procedure

Depending on your constitution and the doctor’s assessment this may be virechana, nasya, or another classical procedure. It is explained fully beforehand and you can decline any element of it.

A quiet day afterwards

Expect to feel tired, and expect that to be normal. Nothing else is scheduled and the kitchen adjusts to a lighter diet.

Medical supervision

The doctor reviews you before and after. If anything is uncomfortable the programme is adjusted rather than pushed through.

OVERNIGHT
Licensed Ayurveda retreat, Beruwala
MEALS INCLUDED
Breakfast, lunch, dinner
10

Retreat · recovery begins

No driving · Paschatkarma · Retreat night 5 of 7

The third phase — rebuilding. Treatments become gentler and the diet begins to widen again under supervision.

Rejuvenating treatments

Herbal poultice massage, medicated baths and lighter oil work. Around two hours across the day.

Diet is reintroduced gradually

This phase matters as much as the last one. Eating normally too soon undoes a good deal of the week, which is why the kitchen controls it rather than you.

Meditation and breathing

Optional guided sessions in the evening. Most guests who arrive sceptical are attending by this point.

OVERNIGHT
Licensed Ayurveda retreat, Beruwala
MEALS INCLUDED
Breakfast, lunch, dinner
11

Retreat · consolidation

No driving · Retreat night 6 of 7

A gentler day, and the first one where most people feel like doing something. The beach is a hundred metres away and the doctor will tell you honestly whether you should be on it.

Continued treatments

Abhyanga, herbal steam and any procedures the doctor wants to complete before you leave.

Time on the coast

Beruwala and Bentota are quiet stretches of the west coast. Gentle swimming is usually encouraged by now; long sun exposure usually is not.

Optional cookery session

An hour in the retreat kitchen learning how the food you have been eating is actually made. Genuinely more useful than it sounds.

OVERNIGHT
Licensed Ayurveda retreat, Beruwala
MEALS INCLUDED
Breakfast, lunch, dinner
12

Retreat · final consultation

No driving · Retreat night 7 of 7

The last full day. Final treatments in the morning, then a closing consultation and a written plan to take home.

Closing treatments

A last abhyanga and steam, usually the most enjoyable of the week because there is nothing to prepare for.

Final consultation and take-home plan

The doctor reviews the week, writes a continuing diet and lifestyle plan, and prescribes any herbal preparations to take with you. Bring questions — this consultation is where the value of the week actually gets fixed in place.

A quiet last evening

Alcohol is still off the menu tonight. It will keep until the airport.

OVERNIGHT
Licensed Ayurveda retreat, Beruwala
MEALS INCLUDED
Breakfast, lunch, dinner
13

Beruwala → Airport

Approx. 80 km · 1h 30m driving · Departure

A slow morning and a short drive. Beruwala is ninety minutes from the airport, which is the main reason the retreat is on this coast rather than the south.

Late checkout where we can get one

We ask every property as standard. If your flight is in the evening we will arrange a day room rather than leave you in the terminal.

The expressway north

About ninety minutes to Colombo Airport.

Take the plan seriously

The diet and lifestyle sheet from yesterday is where most of the lasting benefit sits. Guests who follow it for a month afterwards report a very different outcome from those who do not.

Questions

Frequently asked

Message us if yours is not here. We reply within twelve hours, and much faster on WhatsApp.

Not for a full classical panchakarma, and we would rather say so plainly. Traditional programmes run fourteen to twenty-one days, and any clinic telling you a week delivers the complete process is overselling. What seven days gives you is a genuine, medically supervised introductory programme — preparation, one main procedure and a proper recovery phase — which is a real thing and considerably more than a hotel spa week. If you want the full course, we can extend the retreat to fourteen or twenty-one nights and shorten the touring half; a great many of our German guests do exactly that.
A licensed clinic with resident qualified physicians, registered with the Sri Lankan Department of Ayurveda. That distinction matters enormously here — a large number of coastal hotels sell “Ayurveda packages” that are oil massages delivered by spa therapists with no doctor, no diagnosis and no prescribed medicines. We will give you the clinic’s registration details before you pay anything so you can check them yourself.
Yes at this clinic, which is why we use it. German is the second working language of most established Ayurveda centres on this coast, because German and Austrian guests have been coming here for decades. We can also assign a German-speaking driver-guide for the touring half — request it at booking rather than after, as there are only a few.
No. Most guests come for rest, sleep and a reset rather than a specific complaint. That said, Ayurvedic treatment is not a substitute for medical care, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. If you have a diagnosed condition, are pregnant, or take regular prescribed medication, speak to your own doctor before booking and tell the clinic at the consultation — some procedures will not be appropriate and the physician will adjust or decline them.
Yoga around seven, breakfast, two to three hours of prescribed treatment through the morning, a light lunch, rest, a shorter afternoon treatment or consultation, an early dinner and usually an optional evening meditation. There is a great deal of unscheduled time, and that is deliberate — rest is part of the prescription rather than a gap in it.
The kitchen cooks to your constitution: mostly rice, dhal, vegetables, ginger and warming spices, largely vegetarian, freshly prepared and eaten warm. Alcohol, caffeine, cold drinks and refined sugar come off the table from the first evening. That is treatment rather than house rules, and the clinic will not bend it. If a week without coffee sounds impossible, that is worth knowing before you book rather than on day two.
Both work. Couples are treated individually since programmes are prescribed to the person, but treatment rooms for two can be arranged and the schedules are kept aligned. It also works perfectly well if one partner does the programme and the other simply reads on the beach — tell us and we will price the second person on accommodation and meals only.
We would rather you did not, and neither would the doctor. The week works because it is uninterrupted. Long car journeys, late nights and heavy meals genuinely undo the preparation phase. Gentle swimming and short walks are usually encouraged from about day six — the physician will tell you honestly what is appropriate for your programme.
November to April is driest on this coast and the most popular window. Traditional Ayurveda actually favours the monsoon months for treatment — the humidity opens the pores and the classical texts recommend it — so June to August is a genuinely good time to come and the rates are lower, provided you do not mind rain.
