Sri Lanka safari — private jeep wildlife tours at 8 national parks

Yala is the best known, mostly because of its leopards. Udawalawe is the most reliable for elephants, Minneriya draws the seasonal Gathering between July and September, and Wilpattu is the choice for travellers who would rather see fewer jeeps than more animals. Most of our guests book either Yala or Udawalawe on a first visit, and add Wilpattu on a second.

Leopards are the draw, and Yala has the highest recorded density in the world — but sightings are never guaranteed and any operator who promises one is not being straight with you. You will very likely see elephants, buffalo, spotted deer, crocodiles, peacocks and a great deal of birdlife. Sloth bears appear most often between February and July when the palu fruit ripens.

Because it is the closest thing to a guarantee in Sri Lankan wildlife. Elephants are present year-round in large numbers and the terrain is open, so sightings are clear rather than glimpsed through scrub. It is the park we recommend for families, for anyone with limited time, and for travellers who would be disappointed by a quiet morning in Yala.

Size and silence. Wilpattu is the largest national park in Sri Lanka and is built around natural lakes called villus. Leopard sightings can be as good as Yala, but you may be the only vehicle at one rather than the fifteenth. It suits patient travellers and photographers more than anyone hoping to tick a list in three hours.

The Gathering — the largest seasonal congregation of Asian elephants anywhere in the world, when hundreds move onto the receding reservoir bed to feed. It typically peaks between July and September, but it follows rainfall rather than the calendar, and in some years shifts to neighbouring Kaudulla. We check the current position in the week you travel and send you to whichever park the herds are actually in.

Yes. Minneriya, Kaudulla and Hurulu are all within roughly 30 to 50 minutes of Sigiriya and Habarana, which makes an afternoon safari easy to pair with a morning climb of the rock. Yala and Udawalawe are too far for a day trip from there — those pair naturally with the south coast or Ella instead.

February to July is strongest for Yala and the southern parks, when water is scarce and animals concentrate around the remaining waterholes. Minneriya’s Gathering peaks July to September. Wilpattu is good from February through October. Yala Block 1 usually closes for around six weeks from September, so if you are travelling then we would route you to Kumana or Wilpattu instead.

There are two separate costs and it is worth understanding both. The jeep, driver, fuel and tracker is priced per vehicle — roughly US$45 to US$120 depending on park and duration, shared across everyone in the jeep. Park entrance is charged per person, and rose to US$40 at Yala, Udawalawe, Wilpattu, Minneriya and Kaudulla on 1 January 2026. Most listings you will see online quote only the jeep and collect the entrance fee at the gate. We quote both up front, in writing, before you pay anything.

It depends what would disappoint you. Choose Yala if seeing a leopard matters more than certainty — the odds are the best in the world but it is busy and a blank morning is possible. Choose Udawalawe if you want to be confident of a genuinely good sighting, particularly of elephants, with fewer vehicles and a shorter drive from the south coast. If you have time for both, do Udawalawe first so Yala carries no pressure.
