Four days of the island, five of doing nothing
The most common mistake couples make booking a honeymoon in Sri Lanka is choosing an itinerary designed for sightseers. This one front-loads the country — the rock fortress, the temple, the tea estates, the safari — into the first four days while you still want to be doing things, then stops.
From day four you are on the coast and you stay there. Two nights at Tangalle, two at Mirissa, one at Bentota, with two entirely free days and the shortest transfer of the trip between them. The only long drive is the arrival day, and it is over before the holiday really starts.

Your journey unfolded
Every stop, every drive time, and what actually happens on each day.
Airport → Pinnawala → Sigiriya
We meet you inside arrivals with a name board and a cold towel, and there is champagne waiting in the room rather than a form to fill in. The only long drive of the trip, and it is over on day one.
Met inside arrivals
Your driver tracks the flight, so a delay changes nothing, and you have had his name and photograph for three days. If you would rather not talk for the first hour, tell him and he will leave you to it.
Pinnawala Elephant Freedom Project
A small ethical rescue project rather than the crowded orphanage — feeding and walking with the herd, no riding and no chains. About 90 minutes, entrance included.
Your villa in the Cultural Triangle
A six-room boutique villa with a pool looking at Sigiriya rock, not a 200-room resort. Arrival late afternoon, with a private dinner on the terrace if you want one.
Sigiriya → Dambulla → Kandy
An early climb while it is still cool, then a gentle afternoon. Sigiriya at midday is genuinely punishing and there is no romance in it whatsoever.
Sigiriya Lion Rock at first light
The 5th-century fortress on a 200-metre column of rock — frescoes, the mirror wall, the lion’s paws and the water gardens below. Around 1,200 steps, roughly two hours at an unhurried pace. Entrance included.
Dambulla Royal Cave Temple
Five caves painted continuously since the first century BC. About an hour, and cooler than the rock. We carry spare sarongs — shoulders and knees covered.
Kandy and the evening ceremony
The Temple of the Sacred Tooth as the relic chamber opens and the drummers play. Then dinner above the lake, which is the best table in the city at that hour.
Kandy → Ramboda → tea country
A short distance and a long, beautiful climb — from five hundred metres to nearly nineteen hundred, through some of the most photographed country in Asia.
Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens
Sixty hectares of Kandyan garden, the orchid house and the giant Javan fig. A slow two hours in the morning cool. Entrance included.
Ramboda Falls and a working tea factory
The full process from plucking to grading, with a tasting at the end, in a factory that still runs rather than one built for visitors. Entrance included.
A planter’s bungalow for the night
This is the room people remember. A restored colonial tea bungalow with four or five suites, a fire lit in the evening, and a butler who has worked the estate for twenty years. Bring something warm — it drops to around 10°C.
Tea country → Udawalawe safari → Tangalle
Down out of the hills to the sea, with a private safari on the way. The temperature change is dramatic — you leave in a jumper and arrive in swimwear.
The descent through Ella Gap
We stop at Ravana Falls and at the gap itself, where the hills fall away and you can see the coastal plain forty kilometres below. Twenty minutes, and worth every one of them.
Private jeep safari, Udawalawe
Your own jeep and a licensed tracker — never shared. Elephant sightings here are as close to guaranteed as Sri Lanka gets. The US$40 park entrance is included in your price, not collected at the gate.
Arrival at Tangalle
The quietest stretch of the south coast, where the hotels are small and the beaches are largely empty. Five nights by the sea begin here.
Tangalle — free day
Nothing scheduled. This is the point of the trip and the reason the first four days move at the pace they do.
The beach, and not much else
Tangalle’s bays are long, quiet and largely undeveloped. Your driver is contactable if you want to go anywhere, and entirely invisible if you do not.
Couples Ayurveda treatment — optional
A two-hour traditional treatment for two at a licensed clinic rather than a hotel spa menu. Bookable in advance; we will tell you honestly which places are the real thing.
Private dinner on the sand — optional
A table set on the beach at sunset with a private cook and no other guests. It is the single most requested add-on we sell, and it needs 48 hours’ notice.
Tangalle → Mirissa
The shortest transfer of the trip. A late breakfast, an hour in the car along the coast road, and you are somewhere new by lunchtime.
Snorkelling with green turtles
They feed a few metres off the beach at Mirissa most mornings. We only use operators we have checked for life jackets and passenger numbers — that is genuinely not universal on this coast.
Coconut Tree Hill
The walk everyone photographs, best in the last hour of light and considerably quieter if you go on a weekday.
Mirissa in the evening
Small, walkable, and with the best casual seafood on the south coast. Nothing formal required.
Mirissa & Galle — free day
A second free day, with Galle an hour away if you want it and a beach if you do not. Whales pass offshore between November and April.
Whale watching — seasonal, optional
Blue and sperm whales, November to April. Boats leave around six in the morning and the trip runs three to four hours. Genuinely extraordinary in season, and worth skipping entirely outside it.
Galle Fort
The Dutch ramparts, the lighthouse, the jewellers and the small galleries inside the walls. An easy hour up the coast and the best shopping in the country.
Or simply nothing
Half our honeymoon guests do not leave the hotel on this day, and we would not argue with them.
Mirissa → Galle → Bentota
North along the coast to the last night, and the one experience on this itinerary we would not let you skip.
The coast road north
Through Unawatuna, Hikkaduwa and the stilt fishermen at Koggala, with as many stops as you feel like making. There is no schedule today.
Private Madu River sunset safari
A boat to yourselves through the mangrove islands at Balapitiya — monitor lizards, kingfishers, a cinnamon island and a temple you reach only by water. We go at the end of the day when the light drops and the tour boats have gone home.
Last night at Bentota
A river-mouth villa an hour and a half from the airport, so the final morning is unhurried rather than a dash.
Bentota → Airport
A slow morning, a short drive, and a generous buffer before your flight. We would rather you waited at the airport than watched the clock at the hotel.
A late checkout where we can get one
We ask every property for it as standard and get it more often than not. If your flight is in the evening we will arrange a day room rather than leave you sitting in the terminal.
The expressway north
About ninety minutes to Colombo Airport on good road, with a stop for coffee if you want one.
Before you go
Your driver stays with you until you are checked in. It is a small thing, and it is the bit couples tell us they remember.
