Airport → Pinnawala → Kandy
We meet you inside arrivals with a name board, and you are on the road within twenty minutes of clearing customs. The first day is deliberately light — long-haul arrivals rarely want a mountain to climb.
Warm welcome at Colombo Airport
Your driver-guide tracks your flight, so a delay changes nothing. Bottled water, a cold towel and a working local SIM if you want one, before we leave the car park.
Pinnawala Elephant Freedom Project
Not the crowded orphanage. We use a smaller ethical project where you can feed and walk with rescued elephants and no animal is ridden or chained. Roughly 90 minutes, entrance included.
Kandy and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth
We arrive in time for the evening pooja, when the relic chamber is opened and the drummers play. Shoulders and knees covered — we carry spare sarongs in the vehicle. Entrance included.
Kandy → Dambulla → Sigiriya
An early start, because Sigiriya in the middle of the day is genuinely punishing. You will be at the summit before the heat and most of the coaches arrive.
Dambulla Royal Cave Temple
Five caves cut into a granite overhang, painted continuously since the first century BC. About an hour, and the climb to the entrance is gentler than it looks. Entrance included.
Sigiriya Lion Rock
The 5th-century fortress on a 200-metre column of rock — frescoes, the mirror wall, the lion’s paws and the water gardens below. Around 1,200 steps, roughly two hours at a steady pace. Entrance included.
Pidurangala at sunset, if you still have legs
The rock opposite, with the view back at Sigiriya that the postcards use. Optional, and honestly better than the main rock for photographs.
Sigiriya → Matale → Nuwara Eliya
The longest driving day, but also the most beautiful. The road climbs from dry-zone scrub through rubber and spice country into tea terraces at 1,900 metres.
Matale spice garden
A working garden rather than a sales floor. You will see cinnamon stripped, cardamom and pepper growing, and nobody will pressure you to buy anything — we take no commission from any stop on this itinerary.
Ramboda Falls and the tea belt
We stop at the falls and at a working tea factory for the full process from plucking to grading, with a tasting at the end. Factory entrance included.
Nuwara Eliya, ‘Little England’
Colonial bungalows, a racecourse and a post office that would not look out of place in Surrey. Bring a jumper — it drops to around 10°C at night and most visitors are caught out.
Nanu Oya → Ella by rail → Udawalawe
The day most people book the trip for. We drive you to the working railhead, hold your reserved seat, and meet you at the other end with your luggage already there.
The hill country train
Reserved seats from Nanu Oya through the tea estates to Ella — past Nine Arch Bridge and some of the most photographed track in Asia. Reservations open exactly 30 days ahead and sell out; we book them the morning they release.
Nine Arch Bridge and Little Adam’s Peak
We time the bridge for a train rather than an empty viaduct, and the peak is a gentle 45-minute walk with the best view in Ella at the top.
Evening arrival at Udawalawe
A short drive down out of the hills to be in position for the morning safari. The temperature change on this stretch is dramatic — you leave in a fleece and arrive in shorts.
Udawalawe safari → Galle → Airport
An early safari while the animals are still active, then the coast road back. We build in a comfortable buffer before your flight — we would rather you waited at the airport than watched the clock.
Udawalawe morning safari
Private jeep with a licensed tracker, into the park at opening. Elephant sightings here are as close to guaranteed as Sri Lanka gets, along with buffalo, crocodile, jackal and a great deal of birdlife. Park entrance of US$40 per person is included in your price, not collected at the gate.
Galle Fort
A walk inside the Dutch ramparts — the lighthouse, the old warehouses and the cricket ground. Time for lunch and a last coffee before the expressway.
Return to Colombo Airport
Roughly two and a half hours on the Southern Expressway. If you have a late flight we can add a hotel day room rather than leave you sitting in the terminal.
